According to the EPA, radon is a radioactive gas that forms naturally when various radioactive metals break down in rocks, soil, & ground water. People can be exposed to this element by breathing radon in the air that comes through cracks, gaps, or holes in your home.

Is Radon Dangerous?

A 2005 study titled the “Iowa Radon Lung Cancer Study” revealed definitive evidence of an association between radon exposure and lung cancer. Radon is odorless & tasteless, and can provide risk to human health when exposed to it long term. The EPA classifies radon as a “known carcinogen” and warns that breathing it in can potentially lead to lung cancer. It is the second leading cause of lung cancer for the general population.

How To Protect Your Home From Radon

To protect your home from the dangerous hazards of radon, the EPA and CDC recommend the installation of a radon mitigation system by a state certified or qualified radon mitigation contractor. If you have recently had a radon test and the results came back with a value higher than 4 picocuries per liter (pCi/L), then your home may be at risk. A radon mitigation system is recommended under these circumstance and they can be highly effective in reducing your exposure. Be sure to maintain your mitigation system regularly and continue to test every two years to ensure the system is working properly.
